On the Oregon Coast - Robert Bly

On the Oregon Coast

For William Stafford

The waves come - the large fourth wave
Looming up, thinking, crashing down - all
Roll in so prominently that I become small
And write this in a cramped script, hard to read.

Well, all this fury, prominent or not
Is also hard to read, and the ducks don't help,
Settling down in furry water, shaking
Themselves, and then forgetting it within a minute.

Remembering the fury, it is up to us, even
Though we feel small compared to the loose
Ocean, to keep sailing and not land,
And figure out what to say to our children.

~ Robert Bly ~

TODAY -- Hafiz

TODAY -- Hafiz:

I
Do not
Want to step so quickly
Over a beautiful line on God's palm
As I move through the earth's
Marketplace
Today.

I do not want to touch any object in this world
Without my eyes testifying to the truth
That everything is
My Beloved.

Something has happened
To my understanding of existence
That now makes my heart always full of wonder
And kindness.

I do not
Want to step so quickly
Over this sacred place on God's body
That is right beneath your
Own foot

As I
Dance with
Precious life
Today.

The Cosmic Story: Libra Full Moon by Cathy Pagano April 6, 2012

With the Libra Full Moon falling on the weekend of both Passover and Easter, the spiritual importance of this full Moon is emphasized. All full Moons highlight our relationships, and the Aries/Libra full Moon is the archetypal relationship full Moon since the two signs energize self (Aries) and other (Libra). This first full Moon of the year shows us the emotional issues we face as we relate to each other. Since it is also a super moon -- closest to the Earth -- it will exert a stronger influence on both the ocean's tides and our inner tides. This is the full Moon to be conscious of "all our relations' in our dealings. And a good place to start is to examine how you act towards others. Both the signs of Aries and Libra stand at the gateway of the Equinoxes, when night and day are of equal length. Aries at the gateway of Spring exemplifies the new strength of the returning Sun (in the northern hemisphere), bringing us the potential of our individual new life. Libra stands at the gateway of the Autumn, when we unite as a community to bring in the harvest as we prepare for longer nights and colder weather. Aries and Libra stand across the Zodiac from each other, and so it is their job to unite both sides of this opposition. Libra is better at compromise than Aries, so it is up to the Libra Moon this month to get the Aries Sun to listen. Libra is good at striking a balance if she has a bit of Aries backbone. Libra is good at diplomacy if she uses her Venus-bestowed innate charm and social skills. Libra is about fairness because she can see both sides of the issue. Uranus in Aries is charging us with the cosmic energy to do our part in creating a better future; Saturn in Libra is pressuring us to stand up for justice for and between all people. We must stretch ourselves and become more than we've been before if we want to make the most of this potent full Moon time. What we learn about ourselves now will affect how we handle the rest of this year's powerful energies. Both Passover and Easter tell us two different stories about gaining new life. And they are examples of two ways we can resolve this Full Moon opposition. I am not making a value judgment about these religious holidays, but am looking at their two stories. They are vivid examples of each side of the Aries/Libra Full Moon opposition. And yet when we unite both energies of this Full Moon, we can find a third way -- what C. G. Jung called the transcendent function. Jung believed that if we can bare the tension of opposites in our lives (feeling the opposing pull of the old and the new and not quite knowing how to navigate through), soon a third way opens, a way that combines both energies in a new and balanced way. Some Aries characteristics are in evidence on the holy day of Passover, which celebrates liberation from slavery. Aries wants to be free to go his own way. Passover is about a new life of freedom, but this new life came at the cost of the death of all the Egyptian first born children and animals. To give freedom to his people, the God of Abraham sacrificed everyone else's lives. Since Aries is both the hero and conqueror, some Aries do feel "better him than me'. Since Aries is about discovering our individual identity, Aries can sometimes come across as selfish and self-centered. In the Passover story that's come down to us, both sides can't see beyond their own interests. The result is that many people had to die so others could be free. The holy day of Easter carries a different vibe. A Libra vibe if you will. Jesus of Nazareth chooses to sacrifice's himself for everyone's spiritual freedom. He dies to give life to the world. The idea of the sacrificed king giving life to his people was very much an aspect of ancient pagan belief. It is better for one person to die than for many people to die. The best part of the Easter story is that Jesus gets Reborn as the Christ - his spiritual identity takes the place of his ego identity. The Risen Christ shows us that if we develop a spiritual perspective on life, we cannot die. In many ways, this is the Libran ideal of giving over your own desires for the good of your partner. What pleases my Beloved, pleases me. But this can lead to too much self-sacrifice. Many Libras don't know how to say "no' and end up being hurt when their partners keep taking, and taking, and taking what they have to give. A one-sided sacrifice of individual needs never strikes the balance. Both partners need to incorporate Aries' sense of self with Libra's sense of the other. The best way to achieve this new balance is to step into that larger spiritual perspective and ask yourself some questions: What personal needs are we demanding that our partner fulfill for us? It's up to us to take care of our own needs as much as possible. What are some of our partner's needs that we are ignoring? It's up to us to care enough for our partners to help them out. As partners, how responsible are we for each other's happiness and contentment? We are responsible to act without malice, to help without hurting ourselves and to say "no' when it's the best thing to do for those we love. Too much self or too much other creates imbalance. Oppositions are not meant to break apart. They are meant to complement each other. Libra's symbol is a scale which must be filled on both sides to create balance. Each partner must state his/her needs and desires and then be willing to negotiate a middle way that can satisfy both. Each person has an Aries side and a Libran side. The balance makes the difference. As I mentioned in my blogs on The Hunger Games, the new feminine heroine Katniss is both warrior and mother. She offers to sacrifice herself for her sister, yet stands ready to defend herself if necessary. The new masculine hero of the story, Peeta, not only plans to sacrifice himself for Katniss, he also does everything in his power to protect her and make sure she wins. These new archetypal figures combine the best of both Aries and Libra, defending those they love while keeping the killing to a minimum. Their sense of self-preservation doesn't take joy in killing but doesn't shrink from doing what is necessary and right. In the end, they begin to find a delicate balance between self and other that defines the meaning of this Aries/Libra full Moon. Mars and Mercury going direct: Action and Communication The energies of late March and early April have been frustrating, to say the least. Our plans seem to be stuck in limbo, and nothing is moving ahead. Blame it on Mars being retrograde since the end of January. So take a deep breath and get ready to move forward again because Mars will be turning around on Friday the 13th, the week after the Libra full Moon. Since the warrior planet rules Aries, use the remaining time it's retrograde to question your motives before you act. Forward motion will begin to speed up by the beginning of May. You can see Mars shining red in the evening sky. It's close to the Earth now that it's retrograde. Go take a look! The Sabian symbol for Mars turning to direction motion at 4* Virgo is: Black and white children play happily together. This symbol indicates how children can overcome prejudices, especially sociocultural ones. When we finally acknowledge that all people are equal under the law, we will have taken a big step into true democracy. But the symbol goes beyond race to gender. Women have been second class citizens in all cultures, regardless of race. So this symbol could also be of girls and boys playing happily together. And to take the image even deeper, it indicates the need to unite masculine and feminine consciousness -- our ability to think rationally must be balanced by our emotional intelligence, our intuition trusted as readily as facts. Mars turning direct on this degree urges us to unite all opposites and find that transcendent function. Mercury, the planet of communication, travel and business, has also been retrograde during March, adding to the slowdown. Hopefully, you've taken the time to turn within and check in with yourself about how you feel about your life. Mercury turns direct on Wednesday, April 4th early in the morning. Watch your dreams that morning to see if the heavenly messenger gives you the answer to the question you've been asking yourself. Mercury started his retrograde in early Aries, joined with Uranus at the Aries new Moon and traveled back into Pisces to pick up any last minute instructions from the collective unconscious. With the approaching Pluto/Uranus square in late June, we are all questioning ourselves about life, work, love and purpose. Why are you here? You have to be able to name it to own it. 1 | 2

Halleluiah Everyone should be born into this world happy and loving everything. But in truth it rarely works that way. For myself, I have spent my life clamoring toward it. Halleluiah, anyway I'm not where I started! And have you too been trudging like that, sometimes almost forgetting how wondrous the world is and how miraculously kind some people can be? And have you too decided that probably nothing important is ever easy? Not, say, for the first sixty years. Halleluiah, I'm sixty now, and even a little more, and some days I feel I have wings. ~ Mary Oliver ~ (Evidence)

Red Egg Meditation for Ostara/ Spring Equinox, 2012

The egg is widely used as a symbol of the start of new life, just as new life emerges from an egg when the chick hatches out. As a source of new life, the egg was a symbol of creation, spring, and fertility in many cultures and religions, long before the advent of Christianity. The ancient Persians painted and exchanged eggs for Nowrooz, their New Year celebration, which falls on the Spring Equinox; Romans gave red-painted eggs as gifts at the new year; an egg is one of the symbolic foods on the plate at the Passover Seder which celebrates the new life of the people of Israel when they were redeemed from slavery in Egypt.

Christianity inherited this rich natural symbolic tradition. However, the great spring festival of Easter, the Christian Passover, added a new meaning to the symbolism of the egg, for just as the hard shell of the egg is broken open so that new life can emerge, so was the rock-hewn tomb of Jesus broken open when he rose from the dead on the third day. Ancient cultures saw the egg as a symbol of the rebirth of nature, but Christians came to see it as a symbol of the rebirth of mankind.
Christians see the Easter egg as a symbol of resurrection: while being dormant it contains a new life sealed within it. In the Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, Easter eggs are dyed red to represent the blood of Christ, shed on the Cross, and the hard shell of the egg symbolized the sealed Tomb of Christ — the cracking of which symbolized His resurrection from the dead.

A sacred tradition among followers of Eastern Christianity says that Mary Magdalene was bringing cooked eggs to share with the other women at the tomb of Jesus, and the eggs in her basket miraculously turned brilliant red when she saw the risen Christ.

This meditation is to help you clear out the old energy within your astral body so that new possibilities can fill you. Sit and relax and close your eyes.

1. Ground and Center.
2. In front of you is a spiral staircase going down into the Earth. Slowly walk down the spiral staircase, sinking deeper into mediation to the count of 10. At the bottom, you see a door. Open it and walk through. You find yourself in front of a silvery, misty lake. You can make out trees along its edges, shimmering darkly. The air is a silvery mist.
3. Undress and step into the waters. Swim out until you are cradled in the mists and waters. Now lay back and float. Breathe. After a while, you can no longer tell if you are suspended in water or mist. Relax.
4. Take 3 deep breaths and open your crown chakra. Your next breath draws in the watery mists through the top of your head. The silver mist settles around your crown chakra. As you gently breathe into your crown, name the belief that connects you to your highest ideals. Thank it for sustaining you – and let it go – let it dissolve into the mist.
5. Now take a deep breath and exhale it through your 3rd eye. Let the silver mist descend to your 3rd eye and encircle it. Breathe into your 3rd eye and see what story you imaginally live in – optimistic/pessimistic/spiritual/etc. Thank it for guiding you – and let it go – let it dissolve in the mist.
6. Now take another breath and exhale through your throat chakra. Let the mist fill your throat and let it speak your truth (silently or aloud). Then thank it for defending you and let it go – let it dissolve in the mist.
7. Your next breath goes through your heart. Open it wide. Let what you love fill your heart. Thank them for giving you comfort. And let them, too, go into the mists.
8. Rest in your heart. With each breath feel the empty chakras above your heart. They now only contain the stardust of creation, matter in its dormant stage, waiting for the spark of life. Let the stardust fill these higher chakras. Rest in the silence. Breathe.
9. Now breathe into your solar plexis. Let the silvery mist descend to your center of self-identity, your ego. Who are you? See yourself reflected in the mists, both the reality and the ideal. Thank your ego for taking care of things, and let it go, let your identity dissolve in the mist. What does it feel like? (Ride the fear, breathe in the unknown.) You are Free!
10. Let your breath fill your abdomen and feel your sacral chakra expand and contract with each breath. Let the silver mist descend into your belly and let it take on the shape of your feelings, your hurts, and your yearnings. Thank these desires for energizing your life. Now let them go flowing back into the mists.
11. And now feel your breath at your root chakra, down in the place of engendering and birth. How are you rooted to your life? What makes you feel solid and secure? Feel your connection to the Earth, bless it and let it go. Yes, even this, let go into the mists.
12. Pull the silence, the emptiness, the original matter of creation down through your body. Let it fill you as you wait for re-birth.
13. Breathe. Now stand up in the water which is mist and sink your ‘empty’ awareness down into the fires at the center of the Earth. Pull Earth’s hot, raging fires up your spine. Now lift your awareness through the top of your head and feel the pulsing energy of the stars. This is a cool, subtle fire. Pull Heaven’s eternal fires down your spine. Let the fires meet and flow through you until they blend into a golden light in your heart. You have taken in the power of the new light and it is entraining with your energy signature. Breathe in and out, just feeling the energies. This is the energy of engendering creation, the great God of light come to fertilize the great Goddess of life. This is the energy you will use for your rebirth this year.
14. The golden light glows brightly then condenses into a snake of golden light which crawls down your spine and out your root chakra. It coils around a red egg that is floating in the watery mist. The egg is the Goddess’ gift, her sacred temenos of life. The golden snake flows over to the egg and circles around it. It glows golden and crimson with new life, new possibilities.
15. Now the golden snake of light sinks into the red egg of life. It is done! Give thanks. Your new life is fertilized!
16. Now take up the red egg and imagine placing it on your crown chakra. Let an image come to you. This is what you are ready to believe in this year.
17. Place the red egg on your 3rd eye. What do you see, feel, think? This is your new story.
18. Take the egg and place it on your throat chakra. Listen for your new truth to arise.
19. Hold the red egg in front of your heart. Let those you love be with you, and let something new to love be born amongst you. This is your heart’s desire.
20. Take the egg and put it on your solar plexis. What new thing do you know about yourself? How would you name yourself now? This is your new identity.
21. Nestle the egg against your belly. Feel what’s energizing within you. What excites you, intrigues you, pleases you? This is your motivation, the engine that drives you.
22. Tuck the red egg down in your root chakra. Feel the vibrations. Look to see how the upper chakras are glowing, pulsing, dancing with light. Let an image arise of what grounds you in this life. Why are you here – what holds you? This is your purpose.
23. Now hold your egg and turn around 3 x’s. In front of you is a wooden door. Look at it – does it have images on it. This is the doorway to inner realms. Go through it and turn and close it until you return next time. There is a spiral staircase in front of you. Slow walk back up to the count of 10 to 1, becoming more aware of your surroundings until you reach 1 when you can open your eyes.

Welcome back. And happy Spring!

Tend your inner red egg home and warm it every day with the fires of life. Let your imagination feed it; let your passion give it warmth. It will grow quickly if you care for it.

I believe in all that has never yet been spoken.
I want to free what waits within me
so that what no one has dared to wish for

may for once spring clear
without my contriving.

If this is arrogant, God, forgive me,
but this is what I need to say.
May what I do flow from me like a river,
no forcing and no holding back,
the way it is with children.

Then in these swelling and ebbing currents,
these deepening tides moving out, returning,
I will sing you as no one ever has,

streaming through widening channels
into the open sea.

Cancer Full Moon, January 8-9, 2012
By Cathy Lynn Pagano (about the author)

This first full Moon of 2012 highlights the opposition between the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Cancer, and speaks to the nurturing, creating and protecting aspects of life and society. It brings up the archetypal powers of mother and father, the issues of nurturing and protecting, and impacts our emotional body as well as our social body. The energies of family and state begin our new year, the structures that bind us together.

Sun in Capricorn

The Sun in Capricorn shines light on our place in and contribution to our culture. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, capable of molding and shaping a shared communal life. This sign of achievement rules our governments, our financial systems and our corporate structures. Pluto, planet of evolution, death and rebirth, began the work of renovating and renewing our social structures back in November 2008, when it first entered Capricorn -- first by showing us where the structure needs to be renewed. Since then, its energy has helped exposed the hypocrisy and lies, greed and stupidity of many of the institutions we depend on.

One sign of the structural changes to come occurred around the Gemini Lunar eclipse and Uranus going direct: a broad array of financial institutions are helping the European nations come to an economic agreement based on greater sharing and fairness. The world-wide financial re-organization is just beginning, so watch how the Uranus/Pluto squares beginning this year will initiate more changes in the years to come. It will happen if we "make it so'.

The Cosmic Story of Christmas Eve's Capricorn New Moon, as well as of the Winter Solstice, promises deep change for us individually as well as collectively. It occurred at a degree that Pluto had already worked over, so the seed-time of the Capricorn new Moon was fertile for something new to take form. As we face the dying patriarchy, we seem to have the heavens' assurance that if we do our work and get free of the patriarchal rules within our personal psyche, we will change our world.

What old cultural "goals' are no longer valid for you? What parts of our society can you no longer buy into? How free are you from patriarchal rules that govern your behavior as well as your potentials?

Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, is widely squaring this full moon from the sign of Libra, focusing our attention on how fair and just we are in our dealings with others. These Libran values of fairness, equality, diplomacy and justice must also be the building blocks for any new financial system we put in place. The financial rules have been shaped to the 1%'s needs. Now we'll have to create a system that is fair and just the 100%.

Capricorn as Father and as Patriarchy

Death/Thoth Deck by Crowley Tarot Deck

Capricorn is also the sign of the Father whose job it is to protect the life of his child, to be a guide into the world for his child and to let go of power when it is time for his child to create the next phase of life. "Patriarchy' is "the rule of the fathers', and its sin is its unwillingness of give over power to the next phase of life -- to equal partnership between men and women, masculine and feminine energies. In rejecting its own death, it creates death for everyone.

In Ursula Le Guin's wonderful Earthsea Trilogy, she images this fear of Death as a shadow, a shadow that drains all the joy and color out of life. In The Farthest Shore, the Archmage Sparrowhawk and the young king, Arren, go on a journey to try to restore the balance of life and death, which has been disrupted by a sorcerer who is so afraid of death that he has opened the gates between life and death and now cannot close them. The young King wonders why men are destroying the trees and the earth, and the Mage explains that they have no guidance, no king to show them how to live in the Balance.

Then the young king wonders how this one fearful man could so easily destroy the Balance of the world as his fear spreads He asks the Mage, "Where are the servants of this (man) Anti-King?"

"In our minds, lad. In our minds! The traitor, the self, the self that cries I WANT TO LIVE, LET THE WORLD ROT SO LONG AS I CAN LIVE! The little traitor soul in us, in the dark. He talks to all of us. But only some understand him. The wizards, the singers, the makers. And the heroes, the ones who seek to be themselves. To be oneself is a rare thing, and a great one. To be oneself forever, is that not better still?"

Arren looked straight at Sparrowhawk . 'You mean that it is not greater. But tell me why. . . . I have learned to believe in death. But I have not learned to rejoice over it, to welcome my death, or yours. If I love life, shall I not hate the end of it?

'Life without end,' the mage said. 'Life without death. Immortality. And then - this. This blight upon the lands. The arts of man forgotten. The singer tongue less. The eye blind. And then? A false king ruling. Ruling forever. And over the same subjects forever. No births; no new lives. No children. Only what is mortal bears life, Arren. Only in death is there rebirth. The Balance is not a stillness. It is a movement - an eternal becoming.'1
